PM Modi Commences State Visit to Brasilia Out of BRICS Summit
BRASILIA, Brazil: July 8, 2025– Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived on Monday evening (local time) in Brasilia for a bilateral state visit to Brazil after participating in the 17th BRICS Summit that took place in Rio de Janeiro from July 6 to July 7. He received a warm welcome upon his arrival at the airport from Brazil’s Minister of Defence, Jose Mucio Monteiro Filho, and a traditional Brazilian Samba Reggae performance.
Agenda for Bilateral Dialogues
The state visit by Prime Minister Modi to Brasilia is upon the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The leaders are expected to hold detailed bilateral discussions to widen the strategic partnership between India and Brazil. Some of these discussions are likely to focus on trade, defense, energy, space, technology, agriculture, health, and people-to-people ties. In addition, both nations will ponder means to widen the India-MERCOSUR preferential trade agreement for unblocking more economic potential.
Successful BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro
Earlier, he told Rio de Janeiro that the BRICS Summit was “very productive.” He had long talks with the leaders of Brazil, Russia, China (represented by Premier Li Qiang), South Africa, and the new members, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE. The summit discussions covered various issues, from the reform of global governance to strengthening multilateralism on economic and financial affairs, and finally, the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Modi emphasized India’s commitment to the “Global South” and declared that under India’s BRICS presidency next year, the acronym will be reinvented as “Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability.”
Crucial Leg of a Five-Nation Tour
The visit to Brazil will be one of the pivotal stages of the five-nation tour that began on July 2, 2004. So far, it has covered India, Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Argentina. Before heading to Brazil, Modi met with the leaders of these countries to strengthen bilateral ties with India. Following his state visit to Brazil, PM Modi will depart for Namibia on July 9, where he is also scheduled to address its parliament. Such a tour underscores India’s proactive diplomatic efforts across continents.
Furthering India-Brazil Strategic Ties
India and Brazil have a strong and enduring strategic partnership. The current visit is intended to further strengthen this foundation by intensifying cooperation in emerging sectors to address common challenges. Given that both countries are key players in the Global South, enhanced cooperation will lend much to a truly multipolar world order.
