PM Modi in Brazil for the 17th BRICS Summit and Bilateral Events
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil—July 6, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Saturday, July 5, 2025, for a visit of four days to attend the 17th BRICS Summit and for a state visit to Brasília. The Prime Minister’s arrival in Brazil is the fourth leg of his present five-nation tour and emphasizes India’s commitment to multilateral cooperation and bilateral engagement.
The Agenda of the BRICS Summit
The 17th BRICS Summit is due to take place in Rio de Janeiro on July 6-7, 2025, under the Brazilian Presidency. The leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and the newest member—Indonesia—will gather to discuss important issues facing the world. The theme of the summit is “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.”
Topics under discussion are expected to cover global governance reform, peace and security, strengthening of multilateralism, responsible usage of artificial intelligence, climate actions, global health, and economic and financial matters. India would be particularly keen to address issues related to cross-border terrorism, with expectations for the summit declaration to contain strong condemnations against recent terror acts, including the Pahalgam terror attacks.
Bilateral Engagements in Brasília
Following the BRICS Summit, Prime Minister Modi shall travel to Brasília to pay a state visit at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. This will be the first bilateral visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Brazil after nearly six decades, indicating the deepening of the strategic partnership between the two countries.
Bilateral discussions will mainly focus on the strengthening of cooperation in a number of fields, including trade, defense, energy, space, technology, agriculture, health, and people-to-people relations. Both leaders are likely to discuss additional collaborative efforts and enhancement of existing partnerships.
Context of Modi’s Multi-Nation Tour
Modi’s visit to Brazil comes as part of a larger five-nation tour, having taken him already to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Argentina. From Brazil, he is set to proceed to Namibia for the final leg of his tour. This extensive schedule emphasizes India’s active participation in world diplomacy and enhances ties with a variety of nations.
Diplomatic relations between India and Brazil began in 1948, and these were elevated to strategic partnership in 2006. Both countries are founding members of BRICS and work together on several international forums such as the G20, IBSA, and G4, seeking a more multipolar world order and the acknowledgment of the interests of the Global South.
