Bagmati River Overflows, Swamps Muzaffarpur, and Isolates Villages
MUZAFFARPUR, India – August 7, 2025: Things have gotten really bad with the floods in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. The rivers are way up, flooding villages, breaking through the banks, and messing up roads. The Bagmati River has gone up over three feet in the last couple of days, and thousands of people are in trouble. The government is doing what it can, but some locals say it’s not enough. This kind of flooding happens all the time here during monsoon season.
River Troubles and Road Closures
The Aurai and Katra areas have it the worst. In Aurai, the Bagmati River is super high, and the Chachari bridge in Babhangama East Tola fell apart on Tuesday. Now some villages are totally cut off because that bridge was so important.
In the Benibad area, the water is making people worry about the riverbanks washing away. A team is watching things carefully to try and stop any breaks, and the water people are looking for weak spots to patch up ASAP.
Roads Closed, People Stuck
In Katra, the road to the Pipa bridge near Bakuchi village was underwater, so no cars could get through for about three hours. People can walk or use bikes now, but cars still can’t pass.
Because of all this, maybe 14 villages in the north can’t get to the main town anymore. This is a big pain for tons of people, and it’s making it tough to get help to them.
Why This Keeps Happening
Floods are always a problem in North Bihar. Muzaffarpur is in a bad spot because it’s right where a bunch of big rivers run. You’ve got the Bagmati, Gandak, Burhi Gandak, and Lakhandeyee rivers all going through the area.
The main reasons for the flooding are lots of rain, bad drainage, and silt building up, which makes the rivers not able to hold as much water. Also, cutting down trees up in the hills makes things worse because there’s more water running off.

What the Government’s Doing, and Why People Are Mad
A government official said that rescue teams are ready to go. They’re trying to see where people might need to leave and getting ready for big evacuations if needed.
But people are getting annoyed because they think the government is moving too slow and not doing enough. They want help right away, like rescue operations, food, medicine, and other ways to get around.
How This Hurts People
With the roads messed up, everyone wants boats in the villages. People are chipping in together to buy boats because they need them to survive.
Farmers, workers who get paid daily, and people with animals are really struggling. The water has flooded farms, put animals at risk, and messed up how people make a living every day. It’s a serious problem for everyone.
Things are also bad in other parts of Bihar, like Saran, where the Ganga, Saryu, and Son rivers are also really high. The whole area is expecting more trouble, and the water doesn’t seem to be going down anytime soon.
