DMRC ANNOUNCES METRO FARE HIKE, EFFECTIVE AFTER EIGHT-YEAR INTERVAL

NEW DELHI, India – August 25, 2025:The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) just announced that passenger fares will go up. This is the first time in eight years that fares have changed.

Starting today, Monday, August 25, 2025, fares will increase slightly, by ₹1 to ₹4 on all metro lines. DMRC confirmed this in a social media post, saying the increase will help cover running costs and other expenses while still keeping public transport affordable for the millions of people who use it every day.

New Fare Structure

The new fares are based on how far you travel. On regular days, the minimum fare for trips up to 2 km is now ₹11, up from ₹10. For trips between 2 and 5 km, the fare is now ₹21, up from ₹20.

Here’s a quick look at the new fares:

  • 5 to 12 km: ₹32 (previously ₹30)
  • 12 to 21 km: ₹43 (previously ₹40)
  • 21 to 32 km: ₹54 (previously ₹50)
  • Over 32 km: ₹64 (previously ₹60)

Why the Increase?

DMRC officials say that rising running costs, like energy, staff salaries, and upkeep, are the main reasons for the fare increase. The last time fares went up was in 2017, and DMRC has been trying to handle rising costs to keep its service quality high.

The Fare Fixation Committee (FFC), which is in charge of recommending fare changes, reviewed the situation. They considered DMRC’s financial health and the need for a reliable public transport system.

Discounts Still Available

Even with the increase, smart card users will still get a 10% discount on every trip. This is to encourage people to use cashless payment methods. There’s also another 10% discount for those who travel during off-peak hours: before 8 a.m., between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m., and after 9 p.m.

Fares on Sundays and national holidays will also change, but they will be a bit lower than weekday rates, as DMRC wants to encourage people to ride the metro on those days.

What This Means for Commuters

The fare increase will likely affect commuters in different ways. While short trips will only cost a bit more, those who travel long distances every day might notice a bigger impact on their monthly budget. When fares went up in 2017, fewer people rode the metro at first. Reports showed that DMRC lost over three lakh riders per day in the months after the increase.

Some people might switch to other ways of getting around, like buses or personal vehicles. This could make traffic and pollution worse, which goes against the goal of getting more people to use public transport.

Looking Back at Fare Changes

The Delhi Metro has dealt with money issues before and has had to raise fares from time to time. The last big fare increase was in two parts, in May and October 2017. Before that, fares went up in 2009 after a long period. Each increase has caused public discussion, showing how vital the Metro is to Delhi.

DMRC also has to pay back loans it took out to expand the metro system. This puts pressure on the corporation to make enough money to cover its costs and pay its debts.

Politics and Fares

Raising fares is often a political issue, with the Delhi and Central governments often disagreeing. In 2017, the Delhi government opposed the fare increase, calling it anti-people and asking DMRC to delay it. This time, the increase seems to have been introduced with less public argument, but it’s still a touchy issue for many passengers.

DMRC, which is a joint project between the Government of India and the Government of Delhi, has to balance these political issues while keeping the metro system financially stable and sustainable. The current fare change shows this ongoing challenge.

What’s Next?

Now that the new fares are in place, people will be watching to see how they affect DMRC’s ridership and finances. DMRC wants to keep its service high-quality and expand its network to meet the city’s needs. The fare increase is seen as a necessary step to achieve these goals and keep the metro system running well, even if it’s a bit inconvenient for some.

Commuters can check the DMRC website or app for the new fares and are encouraged to use smart cards for the best prices. Whether this fare increase works in the long run will depend on if it brings in the necessary money without pushing away too many riders.
