Flood Warning Issued for Hyderabad as Himayatsagar Dam Releases More Water
HYDERABAD, Telangana, India – August 14, 2025:Hyderabad’s on flood alert! The water board (HMWSSB) had to open eight gates at the Himayatsagar reservoir Thursday morning, dumping water into the Musi River. It’s been raining cats and dogs in the areas that feed the reservoir, so the water’s way too high. People living near the river need to watch out. Disaster teams are ready, and everyone should be extra careful.
Himayatsagar Dam: Water’s Getting High
The Himayatsagar reservoir’s getting hammered with water because it won’t stop raining. Water’s rushing in from Chevella, Vikarabad, and Shankarpally at about 17,500 cusecs this morning. The water’s past the limit of 1,763.50 feet.
Things have been building up all week: they opened three gates on August 11, then four on Wednesday. Things got serious Thursday, so they had to open eight gates to let the extra water out.
Downstream Areas at Risk
All this water shooting out of Himayatsagar is going to make the Musi River really swell as it runs through Hyderabad. Areas near the river are likely to get flooded, including some packed parts of town. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and HYDRAA are on alert. Emergency teams are ready to roll out and help anyone in danger.
What to Do?
The city’s telling people to stay safe. Don’t go near flooded spots, the Musi River, or any open drains. The HMWSSB has a helpline (155313) for reporting problems like busted manholes or standing water.
The Telangana government already warned everyone to expect heavy rain for the next three days. The weather folks at IMD even issued an orange alert for the city. The government’s asking IT businesses to let people work from home to cut down on traffic and keep people safe on the roads.
Flooding Problems in the City
This flood warning shows that Hyderabad’s always had issues with flooding. Experts say it’s because people have built on lake beds and drainage areas, and the drainage system can’t handle big storms. The government green-lit a Stormwater Master Plan to try and make things better.
But this rain is a reminder that the city needs to be ready for disasters and fix things fast. People want to see the city do a better job of stopping floods like ones in the past that caused so much trouble.
