India has approved a sanction of ₹2,000 crores for emergency weapon procurement in a bid to strengthen its counter-terrorism capabilities.

NEW DELHI: India, June 24, 2025: The Ministry of Defence has approved emergency procurement contracts for almost ₹2,000 crore (approximately USD 240 million) for the Indian Army in a bid to increase the readiness of India against terrorism. The intent was to procure critical weapons and equipment in fast-track mode for the drastic improvement of the Army’s capabilities used in counter-terrorism (CT) operations and immediate security challenges.

Rapid Acquisition for Enhanced Readiness

The MoD has finalized thirteen distinct contracts amounting to ₹1,981.90 crore against an overall sanctioned outlay of ₹2,000 crore. The procured products, executed through fast-track procedures under Emergency Procurement (EP), will ensure the rapid capability enhancement. Increased situational awareness, lethality, mobility, and protection will be emphasized for troops operating under extremely challenging CT environments.

Equipment to Be Procured Key

The critical equipment earmarked for procurement includes a number of modern and indigenous systems, among them Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction Systems (IDDIS), Low Level Lightweight Radars (LLLR), and Very Short Range Air Defence Systems (VSHORADS) with their respective launchers and missiles. The said procurement also includes remotely piloted aerial vehicles (RPAVs), several types of stun drones, and loitering munitions, including vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) systems.

Enhancing Protection and Mobility of Troops

In this vein, the emergency procurement also includes bulletproof jackets (BPJs) and ballistic helmets, as well as quick reaction fighting vehicles (QRFVs) in heavy and medium variants to keep the surface and operational performance standards high with regard to troops’ safety and operational efficiency. A feature of acquiring night sights for rifles is added to further increase the visibility and precision of operations performed at night. These acquisitions are a testament to the ministry’s pledge towards the acquisition of modern mission-critical systems for the Indian Army.

Broader Context of Defense Preparedness

This emergency procurement comes at the time India is enhancing its overall defense posture in the continuing cross-border threats and the newly arisen regional tensions. The government has granted general emergency powers to the armed forces under this provision, thus skipping the usual delays for urgent military needs. This is the fifth round in emergency powers granted to the armed forces since 2019, in a consistent policy of closing urgent capability gaps and ensuring timely induction of critical operational equipment.
