India’s Foreign Secretary is in Nepal to get ready for a big Prime Minister meeting, since things are a bit complicated between the countries.
KATHMANDU, Nepal – August 17, 2025:India’s Foreign Secretary, Shri Vikram Misri, popped over to Kathmandu today for a quick two-day visit. He’s there to set things up for a meeting between the big bosses of India and Nepal. He got the invite from his Nepali buddy, Mr. Amrit Bahadur Rai. The main thing is to pass on an invite from India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to visit India in September 2025. This visit is a big move to patch things up between the two countries, since they’ve had some rough patches.
Why He’s Really There
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi said the visit is just part of the usual back-and-forth and a chance to keep our countries close. But people in the know say that the Foreign Secretary is there to nail down the details for the Prime Minister’s visit next month—what they’ll talk about, what they might agree on, and what papers they might sign.
How Things Have Been
India and Nepal go way back, with lots of old ties and people moving back and forth. They even call it a Roti-Beti thing. But they’ve also had some political squabbles now and then.
Back in November 2019, things got tense when India put out a map that showed a disputed area, the Kalapani region, as part of India.
Plus, when Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli went to China in December 2024 and signed a deal on the Belt and Road Initiative, India got a little worried. So, this visit from the Foreign Secretary is like a reset button.
What They’ll Chat About
Expect them to talk about all sorts of stuff. Top of the list is working together on roads, electricity, and trade.
They’ll also check on how those projects are coming along, like those cross-border train lines.
Electricity is a big deal too. Nepal sells a bunch of hydropower to India, and they might talk about selling even more. Letting Nepal sell power for the long haul could be on the table.

Recent Meetings
This visit comes after a bunch of meetings between the two countries. Back in January 2025, they talked about trade and stopping illegal stuff.
They even said they’d create a group to talk about accepting online paperwork. These meetings have helped get ready for this big visit.
The border folks also met and said they’d finish marking the border within three years, except for those tricky Kalapani and Susta areas. It seems like they are trying to be reasonable to fix the problems.
More Than Just Meetings
Besides talking to his main guy, the Foreign Secretary will also meet Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, and other important people. He’ll also chat with some political leaders.
These chats are key to seeing what’s up in Nepal’s political world. They’ll let India know what Kathmandu wants from the prime minister’s meeting.
The last time Misri came to Kathmandu in August 2024, it was just to get a feel for the place. But this time, it’s more serious, with a clear goal.
What It Means for the Area
The fact that India’s top diplomat is going to Nepal shows that India cares about its neighbors. They want to keep things stable and friendly in the area.
If this visit goes well and the prime minister’s meeting is helpful, it could build some trust between the two countries. It would mean they’re serious about working together and respecting each other.
People around the area will be watching closely to see how these talks go, especially since things are complicated in the world right now. This visit proves that the India-Nepal relationship lasts, even if it has its ups and downs.
