Mayawati Names Nephew Akash Anand BSP National Convenor, Cementing Succession Plans

LUCKNOW, Uttar Pradesh, India – August 30, 2025:In a key change, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) head Mayawati has made her nephew, Akash Anand, the party’s national convenor. This puts him in the number two spot in the party, right under Mayawati. Party insiders and leaders say this move is an important step in getting the party ready for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and what comes after.

Making Akash Anand national convenor, a brand-new position, makes his role as a key decision-maker official. He’ll be in charge of watching over and checking on all parts of the party, including central and state coordinators and state presidents. He’ll report only to Mayawati, centralizing power and control.

Quick Rise and Making Amends

Akash Anand’s rise comes after a rocky time. On March 2, Mayawati kicked him out of all party positions. His father, Anand Kumar, took his place as national coordinator.

After the widely reported expulsion, Akash Anand publicly apologized on April 13. He said that Mayawati was his only political mentor and that he wanted to come back to the party.

A month after the apology, on May 19, Mayawati brought him back as the party’s main national coordinator. Now, he’s been promoted to national convenor, showing that he’s back in the party’s top ranks for good.

Official Confirmation and Party Plan

BSP’s Uttar Pradesh president, Vishwanath Pal, made the appointment official. Pal told PTI on Friday that Akash is now the national convenor.

Pal then posted on X, formerly Twitter, thanking Mayawati and congratulating Akash Anand. He also mentioned that they’re already working on the 2027 UP Assembly elections, with the aim of repeating the party’s 2007 win and forming a government.

Akash Anand also posted on X, thanking the BSP leader. He promised to work hard to push forward Bhimrao Ambedkar and Kanshiram’s movement under Mayawati’s lead.

Changing the Party Structure

With Akash Anand becoming national convenor, the party structure is changing. According to party sources, the number of national coordinators has gone up from four to six.

The new coordinators are Ramji Gautam, Rajaram, Randhir Singh Beniwal, Lalji Medhankar, Atar Singh Rao, and Dharamveer Singh Ashok. All six will now report directly to Akash Anand, making the party’s command structure simpler.

This move puts Akash Anand at the center of the party’s organization. It makes it clear that the national coordinators report to him and eventually to Mayawati.

Eyes on the 2027 Elections

This appointment is timed well, with the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections coming up. The party has already started getting ready, and Akash Anand’s new role will likely be a big part of this.

Vishwanath Pal said that he and Akash have started planning for the elections, aiming to make Mayawati the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh again. This shows that the party is focused on taking back power in its main territory.

Some think that promoting a younger leader is a way to fire up the party base again. It’s a calculated move to get the BSP ready for the future, especially in a tough political state like Uttar Pradesh.

Past Roles and Issues

Before this promotion, Akash Anand was the BSP’s main national coordinator. The position of national convenor, which was made just for him, puts him in the number two spot, a step up from before.

His short expulsion in March and then his return got a lot of media attention. It was rare to see party issues out in the open, but his quick return shows that he’s still important to the BSP’s leaders.

This latest appointment confirms that he’s a key person in the party’s future. It shows that Mayawati is keeping power close within her trusted circle as the party gears up for the political fights ahead.
