Student at Sharda University Kills Himself, Second One This Month
GREATER NOIDA, India – August 17, 2025:Shivam Dey, 24, a student at Sharda University, took his own life in his room in Greater Noida on Friday night, August 15, 2025. He left a note saying he’d been planning it for a year because of school stress and feeling like he wasn’t cut out for the education system. Sadly, this is the second suicide at the school in a month; a female student did the same thing back in July.
What Happened and What the Note Said
Shivam Dey, who was in his second year of computer science, was from Purnia, Bihar. Hostel people found him after he hadn’t been seen for a while. In his note, dated August 7, Dey said he couldn’t handle the stress and pressure from school anymore. He asked the school to give his unused tuition money back to his parents and told the police not to blame anyone for his death.
The fact that he’d been planning this for a year makes you wonder about what kind of mental health help the school offers. It seems like he was struggling for a long time, and no one at the school or in his family noticed.
The School and Family Don’t Agree
A spokesperson for Sharda University said that Dey wasn’t doing well in school and didn’t have the 5.0 GPA needed to move on to his third year. The school says they tried to help him by giving him another test and letting him repeat the year for less money. But, Dey didn’t sign up again for the 2024-25 school year. The university says they’re sorry for what happened and will give his tuition money back to his family.
But Dey’s family says they never knew he was struggling in school. His dad said they would have stepped in if the school had told them. His cousin, Shubhankar Biswas, questioned whether the school cared more about refunding fees than about the student’s well-being. The family said he seemed fine when he visited home in early August.

What’s Going On?
This sad event comes after another Sharda University student, Jyoti Jhangra, killed herself on July 18, 2025. Jyoti, who was in her second year of dental studies, left a note saying two teachers were harassing her, and they were arrested. These two suicides in one month at the same school have people talking about the school’s mental health resources and the pressure on students in India’s colleges.
The police are investigating. They said they got a call from the hospital after Dey’s body was brought in. They don’t think anyone else was involved, but the investigation is still going on. This, along with the other suicide, has made people start wondering if students need more mental health support and if schools need to chill out with the pressure.
